Organize Your Life With Shelves

A pair of chinese shelves.Image via Wikipedia
by Pete Badel

Shelves have been a fixture in houses for many years. Whatever happens, they never lose their appeal. You may wish to install shelving for many reasons. Here are some that you may not have thought about.

Saving space may be the best reason to put shelving up. Your garage may have too many things in it, at present. Consider a simple shelf or two. You might already own the material for your shelving. Look around your garage. You might search your local home improvement center or lumberyard for wood. You may not be good at making shelving. There are others things that you might do.

There are many stand alone shelving units that can be purchased. They are not too expensive. They will not be too difficult to assemble. It will give you a chance to clear some of the clutter in your garage.

Do you need to organize things in the garage? A few shelving units will help simplify things. Wooden shelving is not difficult to add to. Make a layer up high. Use it for seasonal items. Also put seldom used things up there.

Is your bedroom crowded and unorganized? Shelving can make a big difference. For bedrooms, use a nice grade of wood. In garages, plain wood is fine. In your bedroom, use wood that you can stain and finish. Pick wood with nice grain patterns. You can use dark or light wood.

There will be a wood that will match your bedroom colors. The right stain can make a perfect match. It does not cost much to use pine. It can be stained to many shades. Do you like a richer color with nice grain patterns? Consider walnut wood. Place your bedroom shelving so it is not in the way. It may need to be higher than standard shelving. You can make the shelving wrap around your bedroom.

Do not forget living rooms. Shelving will come in handy. You may have very little available space. Built in shelving will fit in. It may take some work, however. You will save a great deal of space. Interior walls are best for this. Your exterior walls will not have available space.

Are you considering built in shelving. Check your walls. Some walls may have a lot space between them. It depends on the house. Be very careful with support studs. You can make wide shelving by hiding the studs. Place paneling or other wood around them. Of course, it will be much easier to install stand alone shelving units.

Built in shelving can be a tricky project. You may need to tear into walls. Make sure that you know as much as you can about it. You may need to check online resources. Check at your local library. Consider hiring a professional. Most will give you a cost estimate.

Final thoughts

Shelves has been making life easier for people for many years. The concept is as popular today, as it ever has been. They will add convenience and organization in any room. Build your own or buy stand alone units. You may have limited space. You might consider built in units. However, it may take skill and experience. A professional installation may work best.

10 Birthday Gifts Your Kids Will Love

Everyone loves a special gift on their birthday: especially our kids! I have put together a list of 10 memorable gifts you can gift your children on their birthday without breaking the bank.

Art supplies: almost all kids enjoy crayons, markers, stickers, colored pencils, gel pens, special papers and scissors, sidewalk chalk, water colors, homemade rubber stamps, "how to draw" books calligraphy instructions, or origami instructions and colored paper. An art supply gift not only encourages the youngsters to use their imagination, but it can be an extra treat when you spend time with them using them.

Books are always great gifts for any age: you can get musical or squeaky books for the little ones, short stories for preschoolers, adventure books for 9-11 year olds, and so on: there is a book for every taste. You can also buy books about your child's interests, books about careers, etc.

A classic movie, which never goes out of style, great for when friends come over, or on that day when they are bored and nothing else could help.

For older boys, a tool kit would be great: gives them the opportunity to work side by side with dad, and possibly learn a life skill.

For older girls, beads could mean hours of fun. Buy a variety of colors and shapes and watch you little princess enjoy hours of happiness.

To the gourmand give a roll of sugar cookie dough from the grocery store, along with a couple of cookie cutters, and a rolling pin. Again, this would be a lot of fun for the little one to make, and share with friends and family.

For the nature lover, a gardening kit with a couple of small pots filled with potting soil, some seeds, and a plastic watering can give countless hours of fun, while caring for the plants, and watching them grow.

A disposable camera will add a boost to the party. If your budget permits, add a small picture album, and you've instantly created wonderful memories of that birthday.

A basket of fun: find an inexpensive basket, or another container, maybe a pail for kids and fill it with fun, cheap stuff. For instance, silly putty, a water gun, a deck of cards, sidewalk chalk, etc. For boys, you can add some little cars and for girls, throw in some hair accessories. Finish it off with some candy or a pez dispenser and you have a fun gift. If you find some fun, small things that most kids think are neat, pick up a bunch so that at any time you have a supply of items to mix and match for a birthday.

Children crave attention from important people in their lives, (mom, dad, grandparent, aunt, older sibling). Give that special child the gift of time: a day out with you complete with lunch, a movie, and/or shopping for the gift of
their choice.

Stuck at Home Fun For the Holidays

Stuck at Home Fun For the Holidays:

Staycations are the new way to enjoy vacations without going into debt on plane tickets or overpriced gasoline. Do you and your teen need a break but can't afford to get away? Maybe you're just snowed in, or don't want to travel over the break. You can have a fun weekend get-away at home. Warning: this activity involves blowing off chores and responsibilities-a good message to send your kids of all ages!

Home may be where the heart is, but it is still nice to escape from it occasionally. Whether you're saving up for Christmas or you can't see your car through the snow, sometimes escape is impossible. You can, however, create a weekend getaway-a staycation-without leaving the house.

To start your staycation, you and your family must agree that, just as if you were staying in a hotel, there will be no chores, not even making beds or cooking! (The kids and probably dad will readily agree, so this rule is targeted at mom!) Let your kids play an active role in deciding what the theme of your staycation will be: Is it family bonding time? Do you and your teen daughter need a spa-like weekend of pampering? Wish you were out seeing the world?

Whatever theme you and your family chooses, design your weekend to fulfill it as much as possible. If it's family bonding time, pop some old home videos in and play board games. You know how you never have enough time to play a whole game of Monopoly? Well, this staycation weekend, you finally do have the time to discover just who in your family is the Monopoly tycoon! Pop some popcorn and watch a favorite movie. No cooking - you'll have to order out for pizza tonight.

If it's just you and your daughter and it is pampering you seek on your staycation, have a home spa weekend. Focus on eating healthy, meditating and relaxing. Take long bubble baths while drinking a glass of champagne (sparkling cider for the younger girls) and reading a romance novel. Paint your fingers and toes and deep condition your hair. Again, no cooking - order in Chinese food.

For those with wanderlust, weekends at home are the hardest for you, but even you can have a weekend getaway by watching some favorite foreign films, looking through photos of prior trips and making plans for your next travel destination. No, it's not the same as getting away, but if money is tight or weather is a problem, there are ways to "get away" right inside your own home!

This can be a great way to reconnect with your family, but if you want your teens to be involved, let them help with the planning and cater to their desires as well as your own. Remember, this is a great way to get to know the budding adult your teenager is becoming, so don't lose sight of the true purpose of your staycation.

Understanding Your Pre School Child

If your child is in the pre school stage this only means one thing- you are done with the terrible 2's and 3's. Now, comes a new world for parenting, the pre school age. This is now a whole new different ball game. This is the time when your precious ones are starting to explore. Pre school ranges from ages 4- 6 years of age, this is what they call the exploratory or the questioning age. Questioning age because your pre school never stops asking the "why" questions- so parents start reviewing you general knowledge if you don't want to sound foolish in front of your kid. Preschoolers normally centers around on gaining control over the environment and want to know what their environment is, how it works, how it feels and how they can be a part of it. So, if you see your kid is mangling his toys into pieces this is the reason. This is the age where having gangs begins because your baby is learning the foundation of social development. Be sure to take advantage of this phase because this is the teachable phase. At this age the pre school kid is like an empty vessel waiting to be filled- up with useful information.
During play time, pre schoolers understand the concept of sharing, they like to build and create things and play is simple and imaginative, that is why pre school age is also called "The creative stage". Preschoolers play loosely organized group where membership changes readily, as do rules. There are suitable toys for certain age. Right toys for the right age develop the kids' logical skill. Suitable toys for pre schools are dress-up clothes; dolls; doll house; small trucks; animals; puppets. Painting sets, coloring books, paste, and cutout sets illustrated books to further support their creativity. Puzzles with large pieces and more shapes to enhance the intellect of your pre school and tricycle, swing, slide, other playground equipment since they are in the pre- gang age and also going to field trips in the museum and parks is also helpful since they love to explore.
One very beneficial thing a parent should do is to provide opportunities for play and social activity to develop child's initiative or purpose. As parent it is our responsibility to impose discipline to our pre school. Appropriate discipline for a pre school can give way to a healthy stable individual someday. In disciplining a pre school, authority figures must apply discipline fairly, firmly and consistently. The child needs simple explanations why certain behavior is not appropriate. No shouting necessary. In conflict situation, a short time out (1 minute/year of age) can help the child relieve intensity, regain control and think about his or her behavior.
So, if your 5 year old is throwing tantrums a 5-minute face the wall is just right. Bear in mind that during pre school age regular interaction with age mates is a need to help develop social skills. That is why Preschool Program or "Day Care" was created at this stage because the primary purpose is to foster child's social skills. There are also some behavioral problems we get to encounter during pre school age these are telling tall tales, brought by over imagination, imaginary playmate are their ways to release tension or anxiety, magical thinking or imaginary thinking, sibling rivalry are seen in 3-4 yrs old; jealousy to newly born baby usually regresses the pre school, they wet their bed, baby talk, thumb suck.
Masturbation, yes, very sorry to say this but they do this as a sign of boredom but this is normal at this stage, you can divert attention by offering a toy. At this stage the they are very much attached to the family and their virtue is purpose. This is the time where parents need to give full time and guidance.
